Dr. Victoria Marwa Heilman is a registered practicing architect in Tanzania; she holds
a Doctorate degree in Architecture from the University of Stuttgart in Germany, 2016, a
Master degree in Architecture from the Catholic University of America (CUA) through a
Ford Foundation scholarship, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Dar
es Salaam – UCLAS in Tanzania. Dr. Victoria is a member of the Architects Associ-
ation of Tanzania (AAT) and a cofounder of an NGO called Tanzania Women Archi-
tects for Humanity (TAWAH). Victoria works professionally as a principal architect at
Alama Architecture (formerly known as VK Green Architects Ltd.) A company that she
started in 2012 while teaching in the School of Architecture and Design at Ardhi Universi-
ty (ARU) in Dar es Salaam from 2001 to 2018.
Principle Architect Victoria is a strong advocate of Sustainable Design and Construction and this can be seen in her teachings, research and designs. In addition to her professional activities at ALAMA Architecture, Victoria is passionate about helping communities in need through her knowledge and expertise in architecture. She has volunteered withHabitat for Humanity Tanzania for a number of projects in rural Tanzania as a coordinator and a construction supervisor. She is the founding director of Tanzania Women
Architects for Humanity (TAWAH) NGO. Since its creation in 2010, TAWAH has had
success in building houses and classrooms using locally available materials and involving communities. Victoria was a Ford Foundation IFP fellow 2004, an Eisenhower Fellow in 2016 and a Mama Hope Global Advocate in 2020 and she used her fellowships in the USA and in Tanzania to learn different ways to expand TAWAH’s work building adequate shelters in Tanzania.
In 2018, Victoria left her teaching career at Ardhi University to devote more time to Alama Architecture and TAWAH. Victoria continues her passion in sustainable architecture through ALAMA ARCHITECTURE and TAWAH’s mission of bringing hope in communities by working together with women and youths to build adequate shelter for poor communities in Tanzania.
Doreen Fred is a registered Interior Designer by the Architects and Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Tanzania (AQRB). She is also a member of the Architects Association of Tanzania (AAT). She holds both a masters and bachelor’s degrees in Interior design. She is currently working as an Interior Designer at ALAMA ARCHITECTURE.
Hand in hand with design and construction, Doreen works as an Assistant Lecturer at Ardhi University were she is keenly involved with dissertations, design studio and theoretical subjects.
Recently, she has joined the Tanzania Women in Construction Mentorship program were is has taken part in mentoring fellow young girls in the construction industry.
She believes in sustainable approaches in design, adaptive re-use and quality assurance.
Beatrice Mhagama is a graduate Architect with a bachelor of architecture degree from Ardhi University, Dar es Salaam. She is an assistant architect at ALAMA ARCHITECTURE. Beatrice is a strong advocate of Sustainable designs. Her approach towards architectural design is focused on minimizing negative environmen-tal impacts, the use of practical building materials and delivering cost efficient designs.
Joyce Said is a graduate Architect from Ardhi University with two years of experience in construction industry. Currently, she works as Assistant Architect at ALAMA ARCHITECTURE in Dar es Salaam while seeking for registration with the AQRB. Joyce is also a member of Tanzania Women Architects for Humanity (TAWAH) and Secretary of the NGO.
She has also attended different workshops in Dar es Salaam including the Montessori Workshop held in Dar es Salaam, Sand cement brick and soil testing workshop by BRI, Dar Glass workshop basing on the building materials (Glass) and Knauf Workshop in 2019.
She loves working with the community because she believes it is her responsibility to give back to the community through her profession. Joyce is more passionate in sustainable designs and low cost housing. In her two years of experience, she has devoted most of her time in community school designs and sustainable residential housing designs.
Winnie completed her Bachelor of Architecture with honours at the University of Dar es Salaam. Winnie has always been a creative and hands on person which is why she was drawn to the field of architecture.
Growing up in Arusha, Winnie has developed a great interest in sub-tropical architecture and sustainable design which influences her approach to design. In addition, Winnie believes that architecture is all about people, people’s feelings and their connections to places. Therefore, she is dedicated to creating the best possible design solutions that focus on; not only the aspect of sustainability but also on users’ experiences by incorporating targeted design surprises.
Winnie recently joined Alama Architecture. She loves working with the team and appreciates the comradery felt in the office. It’s safe to say that Winnie’s easy-going persona and enthusiasm make her approachable.
